Empathy – the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.
Day 15 of March of Gratitude – I’m grateful for empathy.
I believe there are several levels or forms of empathy, but I’ll speak of just a few.
One is the empathy we offer to those we know: it’s with an understanding that they are enduring something we can relate to, appreciate, and/or offer to walk with them on their path. This can be as much positive (starting a new company) as negative (health problems).
Another is what I believe is necessary to be truly effective in marketing, branding, product development, customer service, etc: seeing the world from another person’s view and tailoring the (fill in the blank) to exactly what they need. This what sets great practitioners apart from the good.
Another is what we should be extending to all people: a mix of both.
What if we all sought to solve others’ needs with our abilities and services – or help find someone who can when we can’t?
The most impactful moments of my career have been when I’ve done that. The most impactful moments of my personal life have been when someone has done that for me.
I’m not perfect – I fail at this idea often. But what would happen if we all tried?
I think it could be revolutionary.
