Step One: Learn

There are hundreds of diets, fad nutrition trends, “strategies,” and plenty of overwhelming advice that can send you chasing after the wrong foods or nutritional “needs.”  After all, the health industry can’t be profitable long term if everyone actually became healthier, right?

When we first started, we made some mistakes and chased the wrong leads.  Our idea of healthy was so skewed that we nearly had to start at square one.   Not only is the list of myths and misinformation miles long, but learning what principles and general rules to live by can help shape the next steps for someone wanting to Unrefine.

Check out the our References page for a list of resources we have used to get educated.  Here are some of our most helpful sources, and where we first got started:

  • Lisa Leake’s 100 Days of Real Food
    • Her Website has all of the basic steps and a ton of recipes, tips, and inspiration.
    • Her Cookbooks – the first part of Lisa’s first book is a fantastic resource and one of the many revelations that we found.  She lays out the rules that she developed for her family and the
  • Michael Pollan
    • Really, any book by Pollan is worth the read, but start with Food Rules, then read The Omnivore’s Dilemma and In Defense of Food.  The book and four part Cooked series on Netflix is great when you need to binge something.
