March of Gratitude Day 18: Cardboard

Day 18 of March of Gratitude I’m thankful for the invention of corrugated cardboard. Admittedly, this one is a little outside the box…

I’ve shared that we are moving to another city, which means a lot of packing and a lot of cardboard boxes. I can’t say I’ve ever thought about cardboard this much before, but I had a moment last night where I realized the magnitude of what cardboard has done for our world.

A 150-pound object can be shipped in a cube made of a few layers of paper pressed into less than 1/4 inch thick. Boxes come in all shapes, sizes, strengths, crush loads, and more. Plus they’re almost entirely recyclable and certainly reusable.

It’s a simple thing, perhaps, but one that has definitely had a remarkable impact on our lives. I’m sure most people on here have shipped or received a box – or a thousand. Imagine if we still transported all goods in wooden crates or barrels…

Seriously, did you get the outside of the box punch line? I’m working on my dad jokes.
