Our Favorite Lip Balms

When you live in the upper Midwest, there are certain things that you have to accept at wintertime: snow, bone drying cold, shoveling, and road salt. I can’t offer much for the pain of shoveling, nor can I help you with the road salt (many car washes…), but there are a few things we’ve employed to help take care of the drying cold air. Maybe the most important is to have plenty of lip balm on hand.

Many lip balms sound like they help with dry chapped lips but there are plenty of brands that actually don’t provide much relief and, even with the ones that do, they are typically made with parabens, Oxybenzone, BHA, fragrances, and many other chemicals that are directly absorbed into the skin and mouth. That’s bad. Oxybenzone is rated a level 8 toxin by the EWG and is widely used in SPF rated lip balms.

Honestly, you could just rub some organic coconut oil on your lips and that would do the trick. If that doesn’t feel right to you or you don’t like the smell or feel of coconut oil, there are a few products that we really like and keep around the house.

Dr. Bronner’s Organic Lip Balm

Ok, so you are probably noticing that “Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Everythiiiiiiiiiiiing” might be a mantra you’d hear in the halls of our house, but we aren’t the only ones.  Many rave about the peppermint line because it really is so good.  But, if you don’t like peppermint in general or in a lip balm, try Lavender or Naked (unscented).

These do last a while and are great stocking stuffers for friends and family.  We have 3-4 that we keep in multiple places for whenever we need, and sometimes end up giving them away when other people ask for chapstick.

Dr. Bronner’s Organic Lip Balm and other products can be found in many places, including Whole Foods, Target, Amazon, Thrive Marketplace (they have the best price we’ve seen, by the way), and many regional retail and grocery stores.

Primal Pit Past Pucker Paste

Once again, our friends at P3 have made a product that’s essentially the same as how we would make it ourselves, only in better form (and better tasting!).  There are no chemical additives or harmful ingredients used and they come in BPA-free plastic tubes.  They also come in some more ambitious flavors, like Coconut Lime, Orange Creamsicle, and more if you prefer that in your lip balm.

Unfortunately, right now you can only find the Pucker Paste on their website and occasionally in Whole Foods.

Alaffia Coconut Lip Balm

Alaffia is a relatively new brand for us and one that we are growing to love. This lip balm is nearly as simple as it can get, using only coconut oil, cocoa butter, candelila wax, and coconut. All of the ingredients are nongmo, and the Alaffia Foundation uses profits from all of their products to support maternal care, education, hunger prevention, and more.

We first found Alaffia through Whole Foods, but you can also find their products on Amazon, Thrive Marketplace, and their website.
